The National Occupational Classification System (NOC) contains detailed Information
on approximately 25,000 occupations in the Canadian labour market. It also
illustrates how this occupational system may be accessed on the basis of skill
level, occupational category, or a combination of these two criteria.
This Information is organized into nine occupational categories / career pathways:
- Business, Finance & Administration Occupations
- Natural & Applied Sciences & Related Occupations
- Health Occupations
- Occupations in Social Science, Education, Government Service, & Religion
- Occupations in Art, Culture, Recreation & Sport
- Sales & Service Occupations

Descriptions of Occupational Categories / Career Pathways

- Business, Finance & Administration Occupations
This occupational category / career pathway contains occupations that are concerned
with supervising and providing financial and business services, administrative
and regulatory services and clerical support services. Some occupations in this
category / pathway are unique to the financial and business industry; most are found
in all industries.
- Natural & Applied Sciences & Related Occupations
This occupational category / career pathway contains professional and technical
occupations in the sciences, engineering and architecture.
- Health Occupations
This occupational category / career pathway includes occupations concerned with providing
health care services directly to patients and occupations that provide support to professional
and technical staff.
- Occupations in Social Science, Education, Government Service, & Religion
This occupational category / career pathway includes a range of occupations that
are concerned with law, teaching, counseling, conducting social science research,
developing government policy and administering government and other programs.
- Occupations in Art, Culture, Recreation & Sport
This occupation category / career pathway includes professional and technical occupations
related to art and culture, including the performing arts, film and video, broadcasting,
journalism, writing, creative design, libraries and museums. It also includes occupations
in recreation and sport.
- Sales & Service Occupations
This occupational category / pathway contains sales occupations, personal and protective
service occupations and occupations related to the hospitality and tourism industries.
- Trades, Transportation & Equipment Operators & Related Occupations
This occupational category / career pathway includes construction and mechanical trades,
trades supervisors and contractors and operators of transportation and heavy equipment.
These occupations are found in a wide range of industrial sectors, with many occuring in
the construction and transportation industries. This occupational category / career pathway
includes most of the apprenticeable trades, including all of those related to the construction
industry.
- Occupations Unique to Primary Industry
This occupational category/career pathway contains non-technical occupations in mining, oil
and gas production, forestry and logging, agriculture, horticulture, and fishing.
- Occupations Unique to Processing, Manufacturing & Utilities.
This occupational category / career pathway contains supervisory and production occupations
in manufacturing, processing and utilities. Occupations in this category / career pathway
are characterized by internal progression and on-the-job training. Workers typically enter
these occupations at the entry level (such as labourer or helper) and progress to increasingly
higher skilled occupations through experience.
