NOC Searchable Database

Below are instructions for searching the National Occupational Code Databse. If you would like more background Information on the NOC, you can find it at: http://www.communitycc.ca/resources/readmeNOC.asp.

NOC Searchable Database

Each of the occupations within this National Occupational Classification (NOC) System contains a 4 digit code used to identify different occupations within the system. To assist users, this database includes both formally recognized occupational titles (for example radiography technologist) and less formal titles that are in common usage (x-ray technician).

Some titles are "occupations" (eg. librarian, chef) while others are "specializations" (eg. music librarian, pastry chef). Still others represent a range of jobs (eg. furniture assembler, sawmill machine operator).

There are three (3) ways to obtain more detailed Information on the occupations in which you are interested (click the title to start):

  1. List by Occupational Category / Career Pathway and Skill Level

Select an occupational category / career pathway (0-9) and skill level (A-D), and see the list of matching occupations.

Since there are management occupations in each of the occupational categories / career pathways, this list is broken down into General and Management Occupations.

  2. Search by Title / NOC Code

Enter the NOC code or the full / partial title of an occupation, and see a list of occupations matching that description. For example: If you would like to see a list of occupations in the area of "teaching", type in "teacher". If you would like to see a list of occupations in the area of "teaching in high school ONLY", type in "teacher, high school". If you are not sure how to spell the occupation or the full name of the occupation, type in a partial name, such as "engin" for "engineer". Keep in mind that:

    • this search is NOT case-sensitive
    • the more specific your search, the shorter it'll take to complete your search.
    • the search engine will look for any titles / description of occupations containing the word that you have typed. If you type in "tea", all occupations with the sequence of letters "t","e" and then "a" will show up, whether or not "tea" is a word on its own. So, this list of occupations will include "teacher", "team coach", "steamfitter" and "tea room manager"

    • use "?" (question mark) to stand for any one character. For example, if you are not sure whether "gymnast" is spelled "gymnast" or "gymnist"; just type in "gymn?st"

    • you can use + (plus sign) to indicate a combination of words. Use this if you want to look for a list of occupations with a combination of more than one word in no specific order.
For example, if you type in "jewellery maker", only the occupation "jewellery maker, hand (NOC 5244)" will result. But if you type in "jewellery+maker", the occupations "jewellery maker, hand (NOC 5244)", "jewellery model maker (NOC 7344)", "jewellery die maker (NOC 7232) and "jewellery sample maker (NOC 7344)" will result.

  3. List All

This option will list all the occupations currently listed within the database. The occupations can be listed by the NOC code (the 4-digit code) or by title / description of the occupation in alphabetical order.

Due to the huge number of occupations within the system, this method should be used as a last resort. Depending on the number of occupations, it may take a few seconds to several minutes before each page of occupation listing is displayed. So, if this is the method of your choice, please be patient.
