Curriculum
Enhancement Program

What is the Curriculum Enhancement Program?

The Curriculum Enhancement (CE) Program is a collaborative effort of the Community Career Centre, educators (k-12) throughout the province, and a wide variety of community partners. The goal of the CE Program is to enhance teaching and learning by developing and sharing instructional units that enhance student learner outcomes by infusing career development concepts across the k-12 curriculum.

Why do we need a Curriculum Enhancement Program?

Linking in-school curriculum with key career development concepts will help students to more readily see the relevance of their in-school curriculum and will help them understand the importance of not only completing their courses but doing well in them. Infusing career development concepts across the curriculum will also support students' personal growth and encourage the development of a work ethic that is based upon personal excellence and a desire to be the best they can possibly be. Providing students(k-12) with a continuum of career development experiences will culminate in more effective career decisions being made and ultimately will result in smoother transitions to future employment and learning opportunities.

A collaborative effort

Teachers are encouraged to work with other community partners (i.e. post secondary institutions, sector councils, professional associations, trade councils, regional economic development boards, community groups/organizations...)who may also have an interest in the career development of our youth.

How do you participate in the Curriculum Enhancement Program?

Review
A teacher begins by reviewing the enhanced instructional units that already appear on our database. This review will avoid duplication, help generate some ideas, and encourage diversity.

Instructional Unit
A teacher develops, implements and evaluates an instructional unit with his/her class that, in addition to covering their specific curriculum objectives, must also address at least one of the following career development objectives:

  • enable students to become more aware of the importance of developing commitment to a work ethic which is focused upon personal excellence and life long learning
  • enable students to acquire increased knowledge and understanding of the current and future work place environment
  • enable students to more fully understand the relevance of what is being taught in school
  • enable students to become more aware of the generic employability skills that form the foundation of a competitive workforce-academic, personal management and team work skills
  • enable students to become better prepared to make effective career choices and smoother transitions from school to work and / or educational opportunities
  • enable students to become more aware of career opportunities as identified by our regional economic development boards, as well as growth and emerging occupational areas throughout the world

Standardized Submission Format
The instructional unit must be entered on our database by following the standardized format provided. The instructional unit submitted may be an individual lesson plan for one class or may cover a series of lesson plans over an extended period of time.

Comprehensive Information
The instructional unit submitted should provide sufficient information that would permit other interested teachers to implement the unit(s) with relative ease. The question that you must be able to answered positively is:

Would another teacher be able to implement your instructional unit with the information that you have provided in your submission?

Implementation/Feedback
The instructional unit must be delivered to and feedback obtained from at least one class. Once a teacher makes revisions to her/his instructional unit she/he must enter it on our CE Program database on the Community Career Centre web site.

Sharing
Teachers making submissions are encouraged to discuss their instructional units with colleagues.
